Calculate critical path pert chart

Critical Path is the Longest Path in the Project Network. Critical Path represents the Shortest Possible Duration of the project. Critical Path can be determined by applying Critical Path Method (CPM) on the Project Network. You can identify the critical path on a PERT chart because the chart includes the same information needed for the network diagram in the critical path method. A PERT chart is drawn with circles for each activity, with the name of the activity and estimated duration in each circle. This is a part-post from Developing Project Schedule project management activity post. You will learn how to calculate critical path, float/slack, early & late starts, and early & late finishes of a network path in this article.

CPM (Critical Path Method) and PERT chart template excel (Project evaluation and review technique). In CPM; a network of activities is constructed to determine the critical path, project completion time, Critical activities and non-critical activities. There is a slight difference between the CPM and PERT method. The CPM spreadsheet produces a Gantt Chart showing the critical path tasks as well as the potential delay times for the flexible tasks. You may need to be familiar with some of the basic terms used in the CPM method (see below), but the template is very easy to use and does not require you to enter formulas. Although CPM (Critical Path Method) shares some characteristics with PERT, PERT has a different focus. Same as most of other estimation techniques, PERT also breaks down the tasks into detailed activities. Then, a Gantt chart will be prepared illustrating the interdependencies among the activities. This is a part-post from Developing Project Schedule project management activity post. You will learn how to calculate critical path, float/slack, early & late starts, and early & late finishes of a network path in this article. By knowing how early an activity can start and how late it can finish gives you the flexibility to juggle resources between other activities that can potentially impact critical path, and hence the project completion date. The shorter a network path is in relation to critical path, more schedule flexibility you will have on activities on that path.
