Chhina was an early leader in the development of SAGD (steam-assisted gravity drainage), the in situ process that will spearhead the growth of the oil sands by 1.3 million b/d between now and 2030. “For me, for my generation, Harbir is the godfather of in situ development,” Drew Zieglgansberger, a Cenovus employee who considers Chinna a

The process leads to a high recovery and high oil rate at economic oil-to-steam ratios (OSR). The Underground Test Facility (UTF-Phase A) at Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada was constructed in 1985 by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) to test the concept of SAGD. The process was tested from December 1987 to mid-1990. Most major Canadian oil companies now have SAGD projects in production or under construction in Alberta's Athabasca oil sands area. Examples include Japan Canada Oil Sands Ltd.'s (JACOS), Suncor's Firebag and MacKay River projects, Nexen's Long Lake, Husky Energy's Tucker Lake and Sunrise projects, Encana's Foster Creek and Christina developments, ConocoPhillips Surmont and the Devon Canada's Jackfish project. The SA-SAGD process builds on the predominant oil sands production process, SAGD. The SAGD process injects high-pressure steam into bitumen deposits. The steam melts the bitumen so it can be pumped to the surface using conventional wells. Adding solvents to the steam reduces the amount of water needed. Only about 7% of Canada's oil sands can be mined, the majority has to be recovered using thermal in situ recovery. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Canadian Natural is an industry leader, successfully implementing one of the first Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) programs in Canada at our Wolf Lake property.

Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process which uses steam to extract oil from a reservoir through primary or secondary recovery techniques. EOR methods alter the chemical composition of the oil itself, to make it easier to extract.

Construction is currently underway on the 40,000 bbl/d Kirby North SAGD project, an expansion to the 40,000 bbl/d Kirby South facility, which started operating in late 2013. Kirby North will be targeted to deliver first steam-in in 2019 with first oil targeted in 2020.

There are 100s of Oil & Gas companies operating inside Canada varying from large international players such as Suncor Energy Inc., Encana Corp. and Cenovus Energy Inc., right down to small junior players based in Alberta. Statoil exits the oilsands with up to $832 million SAGD sale to Athabasca Oil Corporation Oilsands & Heavy Oil Shell exiting upstream oilsands operations with mining, thermal sale to Canadian Natural Today its successor company, Suncor Energy (no longer affiliated with Sun Oil), is the largest oil company in Canada. In addition, other companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil, and various national oil companies are developing the Athabasca oil sands. As a result, Canada is now by far the largest exporter of oil to the United States.
